as far as disasters go the recen tsunami is as bad as they get and i have been quite moved by some of the footage.
but... there's something beginning to worry me...
the appeal for help has raised over 1 billion dollars and this figure is rising. that is a lot of money.
the infastructure is not there to convert that cash into immediate assistance (food, water, medicines, etc.). this assistance is coming from, for example, the us military. so the 1 billion is not a lot of use here...
many towns have been levelled and the majority of the population killed. rebuilding these towns might be achievable but who would live in them? using the 1 billion here would only create ghost towns.
i can see how some of the money can be used for small projects - replacing a fishermans boat, replacing and renewing infrastructure, etc.. but with so many killed i cannot see where this money is going to go.
so... at what point do we say enough has been raised? and has enough been raised already?
and where is it all going to go?
I didn't find the right solution from the Internet.
